As you probably know, most businesses (online or off-line) fail before they ever get started. For decades, the failure rate has been about the same.

In most cases, the mistakes that are made are done by a business owner that does not know what they are doing. Since this is so consistent, a person must wonder what is going on to cause so many businesses to fail so consistently. In business, success is usually based upon how consistent you are with the business practices you implement. The easiest way to find success with any business is to look at similar businesses and copy what they have done.

There is one commonly made mistake that you must avoid if you are marketing anything over the internet. This mistake is trying to make a quick profit without establishing any kind of rapport first. You've probably had this experience, where the marketer jumps right in your face trying to sell you something immediately. It's completely unacceptable for someone to behave in this manner when they have an email list, which must be cultivated over time if it to be worth anything to the business person. Even people who have been around for many years do this. On certain email lists, for instance, I may not receive any mailings for six months. The few times they do send out mailings, it's to pitch either their own product or an affiliate product. These are the kinds of lists that have low conversion rates and high unsubscribe rates.

Most of us know quite a bit if information, but by not recalling what we know, it can lead us down a frustrating path of wasted time and money. Maybe you'll read an article, and then think you know it all when it comes to marketing your product or service. In most cases, there is an inevitable terrible outcome for those that actually believe they know everything, and fail to learn what they actually need to do. Finding out what you need to know only happen if you realize that the amount of knowledge that you have is not enough. You have to keep searching, however, until you realize that everything you have is complete. This is the only way you can have the ability to move forward with right knowledge and not wishful thinking at best.

Think of running up a muddy hill - this is how it will be to do business without being disciplined. Not going anywhere is what most IMers do - they take a step forward, and slide two back, never seeming to gain traction in their business at all. This also happens with off-line businesses as well. New habits need to be set into place, which means that, through discipline, you need to remove the old ones. Many people spend a lot of time on Internet marketing forums, yet are not successful whatsoever. You can easily see they should be applying what they know or learning on the IM job to get somewhere with their web businesses. It's all about becoming more disciplined - once they stop wasting their time, they will start earning a living with their IM business.

It really comes down to businesses making simple mistakes that inevitably lead to their demise.

All business owners want to succeed, and not fail. Because of this, it's obvious that the mistakes that were made were due to a lack of understanding. But now you're much more knowledgeable about some things to avoid. In order to find success with your business, apply this knowledge, and avoid making the same mistakes everyone else does.

Don't be the product, buy the product!
